From birth to death, life is filled with needs that the Deacons support. The Deacons celebrate babies born, grieve in times of loss, and offer support to the church when people are recovering from surgery, are lonely, or simply need a caring presence. Below are some of the ways this is done at Chapel in the Pines.
NEIGHBORHOOD GROUPS
All members of the congregation, as well as staff and some friends of the congregation, are assigned to one of the Deacons. The Deacon’s first task is to make sure that every member of the neighborhood is aware of their deacon assignment. Stay in touch via email, notes, phone calls, birthday cards, and through meeting at worship and other church activities. Check the weekly pastoral concerns for people in your neighborhood and connect with them to determine if they need help from the church.
Following is a list of Deacons and the neighborhood to which he/she is assigned:
- Chapel Hill Neighborhood – VACANT
- Briar Chapel Neighborhood – Jerry Douglas and Millie Kabrick, and Marian Olson
- Galloway Ridge Neighborhood – Mickey dePrater
- Manns Chapel Neighborhood – Tom Leuchtenburg
- Governor’s Club Neighborhood – Deb Rogers
- Pittsboro Neighborhood – Peggy Wilkerson
- Durham Neighborhood – Deb Rogers
- Fearrington Neighborhood – Polly Williams and Jackie Walters

FLOWER MINISTRY
The Deacons pay attention to the weekly concerns and celebrations and deliver flowers from the worship service to those who are ill, grieving, or celebrating. The flowers are donated by congregation members and the Deacon will be notified by the Coordinator if the flowers may be taken. Hope Weber coordinates these details.
DEACON IN THE NARTHEX
Deacons and Elders serve on Sunday morning, greeting people in the narthex, alternating months between the two groups. Concerns and celebrations shared with the Deacon should be communicated to the Pastor and to any other church leadership that might be involved. The Deacon or Elder in the Narthex also remains in that space throughout the service to address any situations that may arise.
DEACON ROLES
The ministry of Deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. Persons of spiritual character, honest repute, exemplary lives, brotherly and sisterly love, sincere compassion, and sound judgment are chosen for this ministry.
E-CARD RESOURCES
There are several web sites featuring 3-cards that can be used to reach out to people in the Shepherd Groups. DaySpring, Cross Cards, Canadian Bible Society, and Clover Valley are just a few.
