Committee News : New Church Architect Selected
Posted by hoerter on 2010/9/5 10:40:00 (1 reads)

After much deliberation, the Building/Planning Committee voted unanimously to recommend to the Session that we discontinue our work with WKWW, the church architect out of Charlotte.  As the design phase continued over the summer it became clear that WKWW was not a good fit our church vision.

Prayer Letter January 2010

Dear sisters and brothers,

Greetings in Christ’s name on this 11th day of January and of the New Year.

My family and I are still getting organized after our trip to California. We had a refreshing, if not very restful, time in Palm Springs and San Francisco. One highlight for the trip for me was seeing sea otters in the wild off of the coast of Monterey. At one point these playful creatures were near extinction in California, but thanks to conservation efforts they are thriving.

We arrived back in Quetzaltenango on January 5. Our daughter, Tamara, started the semester of her junior year the next day. My husband, Javier, has been meeting with people at the Rafael Landivar University about his thesis project in political science. I immediately went off to the capital to meet with folks at CEDEPCA to continue planning activities for this year. I’ll be going into Guatemala City again on January 19 to continue the planning process with the team. Classes will be starting on February 1.

The cold wave that is affecting much of the United States is being felt here.

Committee News : August Prayer Letter from Mission Worker Karla Koll in Guatemala
Posted by Admin on 2009/8/4 18:18:07 (119 reads)

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

Greetings from Guatemala as August begins. It has not been raining much here. The El Niño weather phenomenon, a warming of the waters in the equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean, is altering the rain patterns. There is now a drought in some parts of Guatemala. Drought will mean less food in areas of the country where food security is precarious.

More than a month has passed since the coup that removed Manuel Zelaya from the presidency of Honduras. Attempts by Oscar Arias, the President of Costa Rica, to reach a negotiated solution between Zelaya and the government installed by the coup have not yielded results. Zelaya recently spent several days on the Nicaraguan side of the border with Honduras, but he has now returned to Managua to continue to his efforts to return to office in Honduras through diplomatic means. The news coming out of Honduras from human rights organizations speaks of increasing repression of pro-Zelaya groups, including extrajudicial executions. Hundreds or perhaps thousands of Zelaya’s followers have defied police and military circles and a 24-hour curfew near the border to greet Zelaya as he attempted to return to Honduras. Many of these people are now stuck on the border.
