Sacred Art Table

"Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs."-Mark 10:14

Christ's church blesses and cares for children in so many ways.  As a member of the worship committee recently reminded me, the church is one of the few spaces in today's society where supportive, intergenerational relationships are grow and flourish.  In church, children and adults "raise" one another, encouraging each to develop in their faith and their recognition of God's presence and work in their lives.

A few months ago, Chapel in the Pines took a leap of faith and began planning to offer a unique faith development program for children called Godly Play.  Godly Play is more than just a classroom curriculum.  It is an approach to supporting the faith development of young people that mirrors the worship experience.

One of the great joys and strengths of Godly Play is that it prepares young people to integrate into Sunday worship services.  As such, we would like to encourage children to stay in the sanctuary for the entirety of each worship service so that they can regularly experience and participate in it.  At the same time, we also recognize that remaining focused for a full worship service may be particularly challenging for young children.

To support our young people, we are creating a space within the sanctuary called the Sacred Art Table.   Beginning on October 1, there will be a table and chairs located on the left side of the transom (the left "arm" of the cross shape of the sanctuary) near the windows.  On this table, there will be a spiritual coloring poster and crayons along with an adult volunteer. Children may visit this table for all or parts of the worship service.  They also are welcome to continue sitting with their parents or caretakers during the service. While there, the volunteer will aid them in quietly coloring while also encouraging them to participate in worship, as they are willing and able.  The Sacred Art Table will replace Children's Church.

It is our hope that by encouraging children to stay in the sanctuary during worship service that we all will experience one another as God's family.  As Delia Halverson, Christian educator and author of How Do Our Children Grow? writes, "Worship, in some ways, is like a family meal.  Individuals in a family can, and sometimes do, eat separately.  But there is a deeper enjoyment in a meal when we share it with other members of the family...If we never worship as a church family, with all the church family, then we miss the depth of love that can grow between worshipers."
